A Road Trip With My Parents: A Reflection

Matt Barnes

This picture is from a Main Street restaurant in Davis, Oklahoma, population: 2,823.

Based on voting records, Davis, OK overwhelmingly votes Republican.

My parents are rabid Democrats and highly suspicious -- afraid really -- of politically 'red' communities and people. They were both extremely nervous about stopping at this restaurant.

In their defense, each grew up in the segregated south, and each is still dealing with the significant trauma.

THE LESSONS LEARNED EARLY IN LIFE ARE NOT EASILY FORGOTTEN. (May we remember that when educating our kids!)

To their surprise and relief, we had a terrific meal and a wonderful conversation with the owner -- an amazing entrepreneur who would be a Wall Street titan if she decided to -- who warmly encouraged us to come back.

We left reminded that relationships are bigger than politics... despite what pollsters, pundits, and politicians might say.

There is STILL more that unites us than divides.
